The Cathedral
Dornoch Cathedral boasts a rich history. It is the most northerly Cathedral on the mainland. Gilbert de Moravia was elected Bishop of Caithness in 1222 and moved the seat of the Diocese from Halkirk to Dornoch. At his own expense, he built Dornoch Cathedral and the first service was held in 1239. Gilbert died in 1245 and was the last Scotsman to whom a place was given in the Calendar of Saints.
The Cathedral went through a period of destruction and renewal. In the 1800s it was fully restored due to the generosity of Elizabeth, Duchess-Countess of Sutherland.
There is no doubt the Dornoch Cathedral is one of the most beautiful buidlings in the Highlands. There are many interesting features to behold including the gargoyles and the stained glass windows.
The Cathedral is Open to visitors during the day and worship on Sundays.
